Columbia is the state capital with a population of 130,000 in the city proper and more than 750,000 in the greater metropolitan area. It is the economic and cultural hub of the Midlands of South Carolina. Located within a few miles of literally the center of the state, it is an easy drive to either the mountains or the coast. The city has public and private high schools, six colleges and universities, a lively cultural scene in all the arts, a world class zoo, two major museums, and excellent restaurants. Columbia’s overall attractiveness as a wonderful place to live can be measured by its ranking as one of the top 25 best communities in which to retire.
